IT was finals day recently at Gala Squash Club and there was a fitting final in memory of a club stalwart.

Andrew Dowlen-Gilland triumphed in the Alex Doherty Memorial Shield final.

Alex Doherty was a long, loyal member of the club and for several years it was only due to his single handed efforts that the club managed to remain

operational.

His roles included Chairman, Treasurer, Secretary, Membership Secretary as well as physically keeping the property in a reasonable condition. Alex sadly passed away last year and this seemed a fitting way to honour him for all he done for the club.

Sir Andrew triumphed 3-1 over David Burnie in the inaugural tournament. The trophy was presented on the night by Alex's Grandchildren Julia and Cairan Corcoran accompanied by Alex's daughter Carrie Corcoran.

Carrie said: "Mum (Alex's widow) was touched to receive the invite and notification about the tournament, she is unable to attend but can remember

clearly constantly having to pick up receipts/bank money, etc when Alex was at the club.

"We are all moved by the squash clubs new tournament in Alex's memory."

Rachel McAleese beat Jane Logan in the final of the Ladies Championship for the second year in a row.

Rachel found it slightly more straight forward this time but thoroughly enjoyed the match.
