AN EXPANDING energy company from Selkirk is the latest major sponsor of this year's Aberdeen Standard Investments Melrose Sevens.

Spark Energy, who now employ close to 400 staff, has become an official partner of the tournament which takes place on Saturday, April 14.

Teams from around the world have flocked to The Greenyards for decades in honour of the shortened game first being played at the ground in 1883.

And they compete every year in front of a sold-out 12,000 crowd.

Spark commercial director Ian Crowther is delighted to be involved with the historic tournament.

He said: “We’re delighted to be joining Melrose Rugby Club as a partner and sponsor of the Melrose Sevens this year.

"As a local business, with around 400 staff in the area, we’re well aware of the history and reputation of the Sevens as well as the excitement that it generates in the community and we can’t wait for this year’s tournament to kick-off.”

Teams from America, Romania and Worcester will compete with the cream of Scottish sides this year.

Sevens convenor Ian Cooper is thrilled the tournament continues to attract major sponsors.

He added: “We are delighted to have Spark Energy on board for this year’s event and beyond.

"A young, local, rapidly growing vibrant company such as Spark is a welcome addition to our sponsorship stable.

"We look forward to working with them in what we believe will be a mutually beneficial partnership."
