A SERIOUS injury to Chris Dunne overshadowed Hawick Waverley’s winning start to the defence of their Division A title.

Dunne suffered a broken leg in a challenge which led to Gordon’s Alan Redpath being sent off, as Waverley won 9-0.

Hawick’s goals came from seven different players – Charlie and Davis Hope, Craig McCutcheon, Dean McColm, Grant Gass, Greg Ford and Jordan Yardley.

With the Teries keeping the majority of their squad together from last season when they picked up five trophies, they are expected to dominate Borders Amateur League again this season.

A Waverley spokesperson said: “It was a fantastic performance with some great finishing and an excellent debut from Ryan Clapperton.”

Hawick United won by the same scoreline at Tweeddale Rovers thanks to a double from Kevin Strathdee and a strike by Sean Clarke, but the game was marred by a serious knee injury to Rovers’ Blair Moffat.
