PEEBLES proved on Saturday that they are more than capable of holding their own against the former top teams from the Junior set up.

But Colin Smith's team did require a late equaliser from David Lindsay for a share of the points.

Rovers had gone into this game on the back of a disappointing 3-0 defeat away to Arniston Rangers the previous weekend. However, despite missing some regular players through injury and suspension, the Rovers put in a battling performance against a Dunbar side that is expected to be involved in next season’s top East of Scotland division.

The home team started the brighter but created little to trouble Tom Kerr in the Peebles goal.

Rovers began to grow into the game and on 19 minutes took a surprise lead.

A clearance from their own box caught Dunbar on the turn and Robbie Renwick took full advantage as he sped away to lob the advancing ‘keeper.

Rovers looked comfortable with their lead, but it lasted only six minutes as a failure to clear their lines saw Dunbar draw level with a low shot from Dean Ballantyne into the corner from around 12 yards.

However, whereas last week the team responded poorly to adversity, it was a different mindset this time around as Rovers quickly regrouped and looked comfortable with anything the home side tried to throw at them.

And with seven minutes of the first half remaining, the away support was rewarded as Michael McEwan nodded home from close range following a Lindsay flick on from Lee Zavaroni’s long throw.

Dunbar came out the traps flying at the start of the second half and two goals in a six-minute spell before the hour looked to have taken the stuffing out of the Peebles rear-guard.

Darren McTernan and Ballantyne netted for the home team.

Dunbar continued to exert pressure for the next 20 minutes but Peebles held firm to stay in the game.

With the clock ticking down, Rovers began to push for a leveller and with just two minutes left to play Lindsay picked up a through ball after some good hold up play from Renwick to steer the ball into the net off the far post.

Rovers almost snatched victory deep into injury time with Renwick and Lindsay again combining but the home ‘keeper made a smart save from Lindsay to ensure a share of the spoils.
