BORDERS Amateur football was in shock after the sad passing of former Ancrum manager John Smith while watching his village side on Saturday.

John was still a member of the club's committee when he took ill as he watched Ancrum’s 7-3 win at St Boswells in Division C.

An Ancrum FC spokesman said: “John will be sorely missed by us all.

"He was a good friend to all both on and off the park and everyone at the club would like to send our deepest condolences to his family and friends at this time.”

Newtown came out on top in a thrilling Wright Cup quarter final against Langlee Amateurs, winning 4-2 on penalties after both teams scored five goals apiece after 120 minutes.

Joe Tait scored a double for Newtown while Stephen Swanston, Neil Macvicar and Andrew Smith also found the net.

Newtown will play Hawick Legion in the semi finals, after the Teries edged out Leithen Rovers 3-2, with Callum Hope notching two.

Duns Amateurs and Kelso Thistle will contest the other last four contest after beating Coldstream Amateurs and Biggar United respectively.

Gala Hotspur’s difficult return to Division A continued as they suffered a 4-1 loss at home to Greenlaw.

Mark Long scored two for the Berwickshire side, with Fraser Brown getting Spurs’ consolidation, as the Public Park men remain winless with only a point to their name after five games.

Hawick Waverley made it 35 goals in just six Division A matches as they thrashed last season’s challengers Chirnside United 9-2.

Jordan Yardley made it ten goals for the season as he grabbed a hat-trick to help Waverley move three points clear at the top of the league, after Gordon suffered a 5-2 loss at home to Hawick United who saw Michael Moir score three.

A depleted Stow lost 4-1 at Langholm Legion, who had Ali Little find the net and then be sent off.

The remaining Division C games saw wins for Tweedmouth Harrow, Melrose and Gala Fairydean Rovers.
