Edinburgh Accies 5

Kris Tatum at The Greenyards

ALTHOUGH head coach Rob Chrystie is playing down his team's almost perfect start to the season, the Greenayrds side are looking more and more invincible with each game in the Tennent's Premiership.

As witnessed last season, there will inevitably be a blip of some description during the season, but by then the title race could well be won.

On Saturday it was the turn of Edinburgh Accies to be swept aside in another assured 80 minutes of rugby.

And if they can continue in a similar vein next weekend on the west coast, main title rivals Ayr will struggle to cope with their power and pace.

The first half on Saturday was all about offence with the pack's rolling maul leading to four unanswered tries.

Bruce Colvine was first to race across the line in the fifth minute after some swift handling from the back of the maul.

Russell Anderson was pushed over inside the quarter hour after Melrose opted to kick for touch rather than go for three points.

Craig Jackson's conversions were helping stretch the Melrose advantage.

Approaching the half hour Ruaridh Knott emerged with the ball after another driving maul pushed Accies across their own line.

There was still time for Iain Moody to crash over for the bonus-point try as the home pressure continued.

The 26-0 half-time lead was a true reflection of a dominant display of rugby.

Struan Hutchison pirouetted through the defence to touch down early in the second half.

Jackson made it 33-0 with the conversion.

Accies, to their credit, came back into the game with some hard-fought yards - but the home defence was solid.

A sixth home try arrived just after the hour with Gavin Wood finishing off another attack.

In the closing minutes the visitors were rewarded for their afternoon's work with a Robbie Davis try after a neat chip through towards the corner.

Coach Chrystie said: "We began the game really well and a few things we've been working on came off.

"The pace did go out the game in the second half and we made a lot of changes which maybe didn't help."
