GALA Fairydean Rovers could play one of their biggest game sin their history at Selkirk’s Yarrow Park - if they can progress past East Kilbride in Saturday’s Scottish Cup third round match at East Kilbride.

Due to the Netherdale stand being closed for repairs and refurbishment, officials from the club have been in talks with the Scottish Football Association to draw up contingency plans for the Scottish Cup.

A draw at K Park on Saturday against East Kilbride would see a replay staged at Netherdale the following week.

But a home tie in the fourth round of the competition, should they progress, could see Gala playing at Selkirk’s ground.

Fairydean Rovers secretary Graeme McIver said: “The SFA are happy for any replay with East Kilbride to still be played at Galashiels even with the stand being closed.

“The situation would be reviewed should we make progress but we have already spoken with Selkirk as that is our closest licensed ground.

“We do have the possibility of Yarrow Park, but should it be a very big team we may have to look at an even bigger ground to hire.

“Plans are in place and we’d all be very happy if we were to reach the fourth round and had to sort out another ground.”

Gala’s iconic stand, which was designed by architect Peter Womersley in the 1960s, will remain out of bounds to spectators for the rest of the season.

Crumbling masonry and cracks are being surveyed by experts ahead of a programme of works commencing early in the new year.

Although the Fairydean Rovers will travel to East Kilbride as underdogs, manager Dean Shanks, who led Hawick Royal Albert to their giant killing at Berwick Rangers, believes he has a team that can cause another shock.

He told us: “We know we’ll have to be at our very best but we have shown this season already that we can compete with the best in our league.

“A win on Saturday could secure Gala’s finances for years to come – all of the big teams are in the draw – it is a massive game for both clubs and one that we’ll be going all out to win.”
