THE destiny of one of Border curling’s oldest trophies was decided earlier this month, when a rink skipped by Aileen Pirret won Selkirk Curling Club’s ‘Biscuit Barrel’ competition.
This trophy was first contested back in 1885, at which time competing rinks were selected on the basis of whether a curler was a smoker or a non-smoker.
That system of selection has long since been discontinued.
This year’s victory was a first in the competition for winning skip Aileen Pirret.
“It’s been wonderful to win it,” said Aileen.
“I’ve had a really good team, and they’ve played really well,” she said.
“I didn’t have a lead to start with, so had to list A N Other.
"However, Alan Frank joined our rink and he’s been fabulous. It’s been a great team effort.”
The winning rink comprised Aileen Pirret, Bob Robertson, Frances Pringle and Alan Frank.
