A LAST-minute penalty miss denied Peebles an unlikely three points in this mid-table clash with rejuvenated Oakley.

The Fife side have found a bit of form in recent weeks since appointing a new manager.

And after coming from two goals down against the hosts, it looked as though they would go on and collect another victory.

But a breakaway in the final minute by Allan McMath gave Grant Wilson the chance to steal the win for Peebles - only to be denied by keeper Sean Robertson.

Peebles manager Colin Smith told us: "I thought we had done well in the first half and looked the team most likely to score.

"But we lost a poor goal just before half time and they were better than us throughout the second half.

"It's disappointing that we didn't take the chance to win the game at the end but to be fair it wouldn't have been deserved."

It all started well enough for Peebles as Ben Gettel headed them in front after only three minutes.

Oakley, though, showed plenty quality going forward with some neat interplay.

But the Peebles defence stood firm and the best chances were falling at the other end.

Calum McKenzie had a strong claim for a penalty just after the half hour as he was pushed over in the box.

Although the protests were waved away by the referee, a second penalty claim in the 38th minute when McKenzie was tripped by Bruce McAdam did win favour.

Wilson sent Robertson the wrong way with the spot kick.

Oakley responded with the impressive James McAteer shaving the post with an effort just a couple of minutes later.

The same striker did find the net with the last kick of the half as his shot squeezed inside the far post.

Oakley were on the front foot for most of the second half with only a goalline clearance by Jamie McKay preventing Jason Ward equalising with a header.

The equaliser arrived in the 73rd minute as McAteer rose well to head home a cross from 12 yards out.

Both Stuart Love and McAteer went close to edging the visitors in front.

But in the first minute of injury time McMath raced from the half way line to draw a foul from Ward inside the area.

This time, though, Robertson guessed the right way to block Wilson's penalty.
