THE Borders tennis season hit the ground running last week with the Melrose Mixed Open tournament.

The traditional curtain raiser at the Waverley Tennis Club courts attracted no fewer than 24 players from around the region and beyond.

Following some terrific matches it was Bill Fleming of Musselburgh and Adele Fletcher of North Berwick who emerged as winners.

Andrew Plenderleith and Chris Jackson of Duns Tennis Club were the beaten finalists.

Local MP John Lamont presented Bill and Adele with glass trophies which had been made by Peter Holmes of Borders Art Glass in Hawick.

The plate winners were Claire Townsend and Adam Drummond of St Boswells Tennis Club.

All participants received special bag tags that had been made by local company My Clubtags of Selkirk.

The Border Leagues start this week.
