GALA Fairydean Rovers Disability Squad were crowned League 2 champions on Sunday after an almost faultless season of results.

And the promising players from Netherdale are already eyeing up a double after winning their semi-final of the Scottish Cup.

Gala won all of their eight PAN Disability League fixtures on Sunday at the Little Kerse football complex near Falkirk - making it 53 victories from 56 matches this season - to finish on an incredible 163 points.

Dumbarton Riverside were runners up with Claremount Colts from East Kilbride finishing in third position in the league.

At the conclusion of the day's matches the squad, captain David Smith and manager Tommy Patterson were presented with the League Trophy and medals by the Scottish FA.

There was further joy for the Fairydean Rovers on Sunday as they also triumphed in their semi-final clash with Claremount Colts to reach the final on May 12.

Manager Patterson told us: "I am incredibly proud of the squad for their consistency of performance across the whole season.

"From our first game in the autumn of last year through to the semi-final today they have maintained a high standard and have been rewarded with the title today.

"We will now prepare for the Scottish Cup Final in May and look to finish a superb season on a high.”

Gala Fairydean Rovers held a celebration reception for the team, family and carers at Netherdale on the team’s return home.

Members of the squad who could not travel on Sunday, but who have contributed throughout the course of the season, were also presented medals.

Gala Fairydean Rovers secretary Graeme McIver thanked everyone who has helped the squad achieve success.

He said: "Everyone at Gala Fairydean Rovers is proud of what the team has achieved this season.

"For us the point of the squad has never primarily been about success on the field, however this term they have excelled themselves.

"We could not run the squad without the support of our sponsors and are grateful to main sponsor Bruce Robertson Training and training kit sponsors Howdens Joinery, Galashiels.

"On behalf of everybody at the club I would also like to thank and congratulate manager Tommy Patterson and his coach Callum Malone for their fantastic achievement and their hard work and commitment over the course of the season.

"We also could not run the squad without the support of Terry and Sandra Patterson who work so hard behind the scenes for the squad.

"Finally the club wishes to place on record our thanks to the players themselves who have been a credit to Gala Fairydean Rovers and themselves.”
