MELROSE are continuing to set the pace in National One following a hard-fought victory over Boroughmuir.

Early pressure from the visitors saw the home defence come out on top.

But approaching the 19th minute Chris Raymond saw a chink of light near the half way line and managed to race through the line to off-load for Douglas Crawford to dive beneath the posts.

David Colvine added the conversion.

While Melrose had enjoyed the majority of possession and territory, 'Muir looked threatening with ball in hand.

The home team did reduce the deficit just before the interval, albeit rather fortuitously.

Robin Weersma’s penalty struck the post and Gavin Welsh managed to win the race for grounding the loose ball.

Weersma missed the conversion, but Boroughmuir were back in the match.

Melrose stretched their advantage 10 minutes into the second half with Donald Crawford chipping over the defence to collect and send Lewis Mallin in for a try.

Although the conversion was missed, Melrose never really looked like giving up their seven-point lead.

And with five minutes remaining they made sure of victory with a Crawford penalty.
