AN Andrew Crawford hat-trick helped Newtown complete a stunning comeback to knock out Lanarkshire side Machan United in the South Cup.

Newtown had trailed 3-0 to their Larkhall hosts, but Crawford’s treble and goals from Matt Scott and Chris Nicholson sealed a 5-3 win.

Hawick Legion pulled off the shock of the South Cup first round by beating Division A side Langholm Legion on penalties.

The game was tied at 4-4 at full time, with Declan Law scoring a hat-trick for Division C side Hawick, before Sean McMillan saved two spot kicks to send Legion through 5-4.

A late Ben Gettel goal saw Stow knock out Jed Legion 2-1, while Gala Hotspur put up a brave fight despite only having 11 players – including 62-year-old coach John Robertson – before losing 4-1 at Linton Hotspur.

A late William Smillie goal proved decisive as Greenlaw completed a hard-fought 2-1 win at Ormiston.

However, Tweedmouth Amateurs, Tweeddale Rovers and Berwick Colts all suffered heavy losses to non-Border Amateur League sides.

In Division A, Langlee Amateurs got back on the winning trail in style as Liam Wallace bagged five in a 9-0 thrashing of bottom side Hawick United.

Jordan Nuttall, Euan Gray and Stephen Davidson sent Ancrum to third in Division B with a 3-1 victory at Leithen Rovers.

And Ryan Clapperton scored five in Selkirk Victoria’s 7-0 win over Lauder to set up a top-of-the-table clash with Melrose this weekend in Division C.

Earlston Rhymers sit third behind both Melrose and Selkirk but with games in hand after Scott Rice scored two in a 4-1 win at Gala Fairydean Rovers.

There were also wins for St Boswells and Highfields United.
