BERWICKSHIRE'S dominance of Borders badminton continued last week with pupils from the Duns high school claiming nine of the 12 titles.

A total of 40 players from across the region took to the courts in Earlston.

But it was the Berwickshire High players who proved to be dominant both in the singles and doubles across the age-group competitions.

In the Under 19s singles Isaac Weir edged out Peebles High's Aiden Ferrier.

And Weir also won the boys doubles for Berwickshire with partner William Leuty, beating the Peebles pair of Ferrier and Eden Bal in the final.

Jodie Black claimed the Under 19s girls singles for Eyemouth High as she beat Earlston's Sophie Anderson in the final.

But it was Earlston who claimed the doubles with Anderson and her partner Gemma Fullerton taking the title.

Berwickshire's Finlay Rhind beat his classmate Kieran Burns in the final of the Under 16s Boys.

Rhind and Burns teamed up to take the doubles.

And Fullerton, following her Under 19s doubles win, to claim the Under 16s girls title after defeating Hawick's Chloe Blaikie.

But it was Berwickshire's Heather Brown and Sofia Mazzoni who won the Under 16s doubles.

Calum Landon won the Under 14s singles for Berwickshire after a tight final with Innes Cormack of Peebles.

Eilidh Patterson returned to the Duns school with the girls' singles, while Erin Doyle and Millie McManus won the doubles for Berwickshire.

To complete a clean sweep at Under 14s Olly Langley and Calum Landon triumphed in the boys' doubles.

Harry Turnbull from Borders Badminton said: "The day was a huge success and the standard of badminton from these fine, young players was, at times, simply breathtaking.

"The committee, parents and helpers rallied round doing teas/coffees and cakes, selling raffle tickets, scoring games, and running the competition from the technical table.

"Large tournaments such as this take a lot of organising behind the scenes and people probably don’t realise how much work goes into an event like this, which is all done on a voluntary basis."

Thanks were given to Audrey Rae, Pearl Ford, Lynn Rhind, Myra Younger, Christine Wylie, Gordon McLean, Dave Burns, Leona Rhind, David Rhind and Pete Hardie for al of their help.

The Borders Primary Schools Badminton Championships will take place on February 22 at Earlston High School.

There is still time to enter through school PE departments.
