EARLSTON Rhymers caused a Waddell Cup shock after dumping Gala Hotspur out of the competition at the last 16 stage.

Scott Rice scored two as the Division C side defeated Spurs – who sit second in Division B – 4-3 at Runciman Park.

Another stunning Scott Nightingale free kick, along with goals from Dan Cairnie and Graeme Clark, proved just to be consolations for Gala.

Scott Duncan’s 97th minute strike saw Hawick Waverley squeeze past Gala Fairydean Rovers.

Division A champions-elect Waverley looked on course for a routine win when Taylor Hope put them ahead in the first half, but Fairydean Rovers of Division C pulled level at the start of the second period through a Josh Lamb goal.

It meant Hawick needed Duncan’s late, late goal to make it into the last eight.

There was no such drama at Langholm as defending Waddell Cup champions Langlee Amateurs thumped their hosts 4-0. Liam Wallace’s double, and goals from Tyler Smith and Billy Miller saw Langlee ease to victory.

New signing Sam Conington scored an extra time winner as Greenlaw knocked out Leithen Rovers, and Luke Strangeways continued his fine form with two goals for Duns in their 3-1 win at Highfields United.

Selkirk Victoria conceded four goals in the last ten minutes to lose 5-0 to Tweedmouth Harrow, and a Blair Meikle hat-trick saw Tweeddale Rovers thrash Hawick Legion 9-1.

Daniel Pattenden made it nine goals in four games with another double for Chirnside United in a 3-2 win at Tweedmouth Amateurs.

In the Forsyth Cup, Newtown avoided a shock with a 3-2 victory at Division B strugglers Coldstream Amateurs, with Andrew Crawford and Darren Blacklock on target.

Jed Legion enjoyed a much needed win as Paul Young’s double helped them to a 6-1 win over Melrose, while the Kelso derby saw Thistle defeat the Amateurs 4-1.

There were also wins for Biggar United and Lauder in the Forsyth Cup.
