GALA Fairydean Rovers moved up to 7th place in the Lowland League table with an emphatic Borders derby victory over Gretna 2008 at Netherdale yesterday.

Ciaran Greene opened the scoring in the second minute after taking advantage of a fumble by Gretna keeper Jay Kennedy following a Danny Galbraith corner.

Ten minutes later Jamie Semple did well to win possession before finding Galbraith who squared the ball into the path of Liam Watt and the midfielder fired the ball into the bottom corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area.

Watt scored is second of the day in the 33rd minute after a Galbraith free-kick was headed into his path and his first time effort from 20-yards flew into the top corner.

The half time score was 3-0 but could easily have been double that as Gala struck the woodwork on two occasions and Nicky Reid knocked a cross over the bar from three yards out.

Border Telegraph:

Jamie Semple added a fourth after taking advantage of a slack back pass before the moment the fas had been waiting on arrived and Zander Murray entered the fray along with fellow signing Quinn Mitchell on the hour make.

But the next goal went to the visitors when Robbie Ivison connected with a cross from the right and knocked the ball past Jay Cantley from close range.

Gretna could have added a second moments later but from then on Gala managed the game out and deservedly took the points.

The full match report with reactions will be in next week’s Border Telegraph.
