BORDERERS are being asked to give their feedback on the one-way system introduced on Chiefswood Road as part of a council consultation.

The one-way system was implemented by Scottish Borders Council (SBC) over the summer as part of the SUSTRANS Spaces For People programme.

The trial sought to investigate whether a shared path for pedestrians and cyclists could suitably run alongside the Melrose road.

Councillor Gordon Edgar, executive member for infrastructure, travel and transport: “We would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding during the trail which has enabled us to gather vital data to support the development of a safe pedestrian and cycle path along the route.

“Our initial evaluations would indicate that numbers using the path justify further work to plan for a new shared pedestrian and cycle path option which would operate alongside a two-way Chiefswood Road, but we are keen to get further input from the local community to so we can take their further views into account."

The one-way trial is due to end on September 26 when Chiefswood Road and Wester Farm Road will return to a two-way system.

However, to ensure the safe removal of temporary measures along the road, both Chiefswood Road and Wester Farm Road will close completely on September 25 and 26 between 8am and 6pm.

Mr Edgar added: “In the meantime, we will be working with our partners Sustrans to properly evaluate the effectiveness of the trial, incorporating feedback from the consultation once that has been concluded.

“We plan to have more information about the next steps available before the end of the year when we will hold further consultation and discussion within the local community.”
