AS a new year approaches, new coronavirus data shows that in 2021 the Borders recorded more than 12,000 cases of the virus.

According to the figures released at 2pm today (December 31) 206 cases of COVID-19 were reported in the region in the last 24 hours.

This means than from January 1 to today, a total of 12,496 cases were found in the Borders.

The total since the start of the pandemic in March 2020 now stands at 14,150.

There are currently 18 people in hospital with recently confirmed cases of coronavirus – seven more than yesterday.

The highest number of hospital patients with COVID-19 this year was 41 in January.

However, over the course of this year there were 156 days where there were fewer than five patients in hospital with coronavirus in the Borders.

Nationally there have been 914,841 cases of coronavirus this year and there are currently 859 people in hospital.
