AFTER a month of consultation a Borders road is to remain closed to vehicles.

Caddonfoot Road (the B170) was closed off to cars in July 2020 as part of a Scottish Borders Council (SBC) scheme to improve pedestrian access to the playing field and to be safer for exercise.

The road will now remain as a shared footpath and cycle path.

A SBC spokesperson said: "After receiving more than 300 consultation responses, Scottish Borders Council is taking steps to make permanent the conversion of part of Caddonfoot Road to a shared footpath and cycle path.

"Restricted vehicular access on the route was first introduced at the start of the pandemic as part of a trial of a range of measures across the region to encourage more active travel including walking, cycling and wheeling."

The council launched the consultation last month and received more than 300 responses about how Caddonfoot Road should be used.

The spokesperson added: "In this location, where there is insufficient space on the verge to provide a pavement from Clovenfords to Caddonfoot, or to the playing field, this has also provided safer access.

"The consultation, which elicited 310 responses, showed that 201 respondents supported the remodelling of the road to a shared path.

"This was also a position supported by local elected members and the community council."
