STEALING a quantity of underwear, perfume and jewellery from his former partner’s home cost a Peebles man a fine of £150 along with a £100 compensation order.

Forty-eight-year-old Scott West pleaded guilty to the theft offence which happened at a house in Peebles on January 19 last year.

Selkirk Sheriff Court was told West had been in a relationship for five years but it had ended in 2013.

On the day of the offence the accused and his son had gone to the woman’s house.

Depute fiscal Fiona Hamilton said: “She told him to wait outside but he insisted he wanted in. At one point he was upstairs alone and entered the woman’s bedroom.

“He has taken the items such as perfume, nail varnish, jewellery and underwear – it was noted later they were missing – and it was estimated they had a value of about £100.

“A search warrant was executed for the accused’s home and about £80 of the items were recovered.”

Defence lawyer Liam Alexander said his client could not offer an explanation on why he committed the theft. He said: “It was opportunistic. He does not know what he was thinking by doing it.”

Sheriff Peter Paterson fined West £150 and imposed a £100 compensation order and a £10 Victim Surcharge.

In addition he put in place a Non-Harassment Order preventing West from having any contact with his former partner for two years.
