BORDERS MP John Lamont has joined a national parliamentary campaign to keep bank branches open across the country.

The ‘Save Our Banks’ campaign has been launched by Derbyshire Dales representative, Sarah Dines MP.

In a letter to launch the campaign, Ms Dines said some communities had “effectively been debanked” and closures have “far-reaching consequences, impacting vulnerable individuals, farmers, small businesses and the elderly to name a few who rely on these services."

The MP for Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk has informed the MP he is joining the campaign, which aims to ‘raise awareness about the challenges faced by local communities when they lose their banks and to advocate for solutions that protect access to crucial financial services and cash'.

Mr Lamont said: “Big banks have treated loyal customers in the Borders disgracefully by closing branches and leaving people without easy access to cash services.

“I am pleased to join this national campaign to raise awareness of this critical issue and find a constructive solution that protects local bank services.

“Residents across the Borders, especially older and vulnerable people, need reliable access to cash services in their own community.”
