FINAL preparations are taking place for The Galashiels Walking Weekend, which takes place next Saturday and Sunday (April 30-May 1).

The walks will take in some of the most scenic and picturesque routes in the region, as the organisers hope to build on the success of last year's Borders Walking Festival.

There is a choice of eight walks on the slopes around Galashiels over the two days and these include include visits to Cauldshiels Loch, Buckholm Tower, Yair Bridge and the Three Brethren. Each walk costs £8, including transport where it is needed.

Speaking to the Border Telegraph, event coordinator Tracey Alder said: “All the walks have been sorted, the registration and bookings are sorted and the Festival Concert is ready to go ahead.

“Border Events have once again been a huge help. They have taken the bookings for us and we thank them for that. Walks are filling up nicely but there are a few spaces still available. Walkers obviously know what they like as you can tell by the speed of the bookings which ones are most popular.”

Registration will be at the Focus Centre and walks will depart and return to the centre on both days. Walkers can expect the usual array of glorious home baking prepared by Judith Cleghorn and her team when they return on both days from walking the beautiful landscape surrounding Galashiels.

“This year's weekend festival was to be our water tester, and judging by the popularity this is one event that we now intend to repeat every year,” said Tracey.

After Saturday's exertion during the day, walkers can relax and enjoy an evening of fabulous entertainment at the Focus Centre.

Selkirk's John Nichol is on hand to provide music and laughter, The Bogie Close Stompers and their highly entertaining upbeat skiffle music make a welcome return and the Ward School of Irish Dance are always a delight to watch. Nikki's Bar will be also be providing a mobile bar for the evening, to provide drinks and refreshments.

There will be a quiz, a raffle and buffet all included in the price of £6 a ticket. Tickets can be purchased from calling 01896753296 or concert lovers can pay at the door on the night.
