NEXT Friday the Royal Philharmonic Society Award winning Ruisi String Quartet will perform in Melrose Parish Church Hall for the Melrose Music Society.

Founded in 2012 by the Ruisi brothers, the quartet perform in venues across the UK and Europe.

In 2016 they became Tunnell Trust Award winners and this year they are touring throughout Scotland, having been selected as Concert Promoters’ Group young artists.

Alessandro Ruisi plays first violin, brother Max the ’cello, Guy Button second violin and Asher Zaccardelli the viola.

Guy Button, a Cambridge and Royal Guildhall School of Music graduate, also performs as a soloist, whilst violist Asher Zaccardelli studied at St Mary’s Music school in Edinburgh and the Royal Academy of Music in London before playing with various orchestras throughout the UK as well as performing as a chamber musician.

Alessandro Ruisi, who has an outstanding reputation as a solo violinist and a chamber musician, is co-leader of the European Union Chamber Orchestra and regularly performs with the Philharmonia whilst brother Max is Artistic Director and principal cellist of 12 Ensemble, London’s leading un-conducted string orchestra. After graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, he studied and played in Basel, the Netherlands and Prague.

The Melrose programme begins with one of Mozart’s most loved quartets, No 19 in C Major, often referred to as the ‘Dissonance Quartet’ in view of the sombre dissonant introduction to the first movement, followed by Hugo Wolf’s Italian Serenade. Written in 1887 and inspired by a poem, this piece was described by the music biographer Robert W Gutman, who died last year: "The essence of the delicious Italian Serenade is its antithesis of romantic sentiment and mocking wit".

To complete this programme of 19th century string quartet music, the Ruisi will play Schubert’s sublime ‘Rosamunde’ Quartet in A minor written around the same time as ‘Death and the Maiden’.

Tickets for the Friday, February 24 performance, which is sponsored by the Tunnell Trust, are available at the door for non-members, £12.

Free for Accompanied children.

The performance will start at 7.30pm.
