FANS of film and comedy are in for an arthouse treat this weekend.

Acclaimed Galashiels filmmakers and musicians Sarahjane Swan and Roger Simian are hosting a magical evening of movies and mayhem at the MacArts Centre.

Fresh from attending the screening of their own film, Orphine, at the Biblioteca Municipal Almeida Garrett in Porto last week, Swan and Simian are now putting the final edits to Sunday's B-move bill.

Following a screening of the playful and poetic 2012 full-length movie, Savage Witches, its makers Daniel Fawcett and Clara Pais will partake in a question-and-answer session.

Savage Witches is a colourful collage of sounds and images that has been created using all manner of processes and formats from VHS and Super 8 to drawn animation and hand-coloured frames, resulting in a bold and expressionistic exploration of the art of cinema.

Every bit as colourful, although not quite so structured, is the magnificent Twonkey who will also take to the stage during the evening.

Described as comedy genius, the creation of former Dawn of the Replicants frontman Paul Vickers, has earned a cult following on the circuit.

And he is regularly picking up awards and five-star reviews for his infectious Edinburgh Fringe shows.

Paul, who lived in Galashiels for many years, is making a welcome return.

Organiser Simian, who was also a member of John Peel-favourites Dawn of the Replicants, is thrilled his old band mate is appearing.

He told us: "We will be presenting the homecoming of Paul, who was a one-time resident of Galashiels, in his guise as Twonkey.

"Paul's Twonkey show has garnered a cult following at the Fringe. He's had great support from the press, including a 5-star review in The List and, in 2016, won the Malcolm Hardee Award for Comic Originality.

“We know that there are a lot of people already aware of the Twonkey shows who would love to see Paul bring his menagerie of tragi-comic weirdos to an old refurbished church in Galashiels.

"We also like the idea of introducing the Twonkey-verse to a new audience.”

Several short films from US underground filmmaker Walter Ungerer, Canadian Allan Brown, and Germany's Dagie Brundert will also be shown throughout the evening.

And there will also be a short film screening by Duncan Reekie, as well several works by the hosts, Simian and Swan.

The Galashiels duo have been showing their films at festivals across the UK - and are both excited about bringing a few films by their influences to their hometown.

Sarahjane added: "This last year we've been drawing a lot of inspiration from experimental filmmakers from all over the world.

"Clara and Daniel, from Film Panic, were wonderful in setting up the screening in Porto and very generous in trying their best to get us over to their city.

"We've been exploring the kinds of hands-on techniques that filmmakers like Walter Ungerer have been using since the early days of experimental cinema - scratching, painting and manipulating the film itself so that you get great effects once the film is projected.”

Sunday's evening of film and comedy, which goes under the banner, Moon Moths, starts at 6.30pm. Tickets, priced at £3, are available on the door.
