SELKIRK are about to add another portrait to their international wall of fame at Yarrow Park.

Although a few former capped players have arrived at the Lowland League club in recent years, it’s been a long time since a current member of the squad caught the eye of a national manager.

But next month Thomas Clark - the club's poet-in-residence - will pull on his boots to play for the Scotland Writers Team.

The Scotland Writers team, which boasts among its ranks literary heavyweights such as Christopher Brookmyre, Ian Rankin and former Aberdeen striker Arild Stavrum, will face writers teams from countries all across Europe.

Last year saw the team fall to defeats against Sweden and Italy, but Thomas is hoping this season will see a revival of fortunes.

Thomas told us: “Representing Scotland is a dream come true for most people.

"It’ll be a fantastic experience.”

“It was actually off the back of my residency at Selkirk that it all came about.

"Shortly after that, the team got in touch to ask if I would like to be involved – and of course I jumped at the chance.”

The Scots writers will gear up for their 2016 schedule with a friendly against a team of journalists at Airdrieonian’s Excelsior Stadium on March 18. Other fixtures are to be announced, but Thomas, a former player with clubs ranging from Hamilton to Hawick, is taking it one game at a time.

He added: “The residency has been great exposure for Selkirk.

“It’s got people from outside the Borders interested in both the town and in the team, folk who might otherwise never have given us a second thought.

"This is just another example of that, and I hope there will be plenty more to come.”
