PEEBLES police are trying to track down motoring thugs who terrorised an elderly couple on the outskirts of Cardrona last week.

The husband and wife, who are both 68-years-old, feared for their lives as they were blocked in by the men just off the A72.

The local couple were left traumatised by the attack which saw their car doors booted in.

The elderly gentleman, who we agreed not to name, relived the horror this week.

He told the Peeblesshire News: "I had to drive up onto the pavement near Horsburgh Cottages to get away - they were kicking our car doors in.

"My wife and I were terrified. We didn't know what they were going to do."

The incident happened at around 10pm last Thursday as the couple drove between Leadburn and Eddleston on their way to Peebles.

A car roared past their vehicle at speed with its lights on full beam.

Further down the A703 the elderly driver encountered the same car going slowly.

And when he attempted to overtake, it began to weave across the road.

The man continued: "The car had came screaming past me at speed. I can only think the reason he did what he did further down the road was because I hadn't dimmed my lights from full beam - he went past me so quickly, I'd never had a chance.

"By the time we reached Peebles the car in front was driving at around 10 to 15 miles an hour, and he kept weaving across the road to prevent me from overtaking.

"He waited at the junctions to see which way I was going and continued to weave around the road."

As they reached the Cardrona junction of the A72 another car arrived on the scene from the Innerleithen direction.

And the two vehicles blocked in the couple before the drivers launched their attack.

The elderly man added: "They both got out and started kicking away at my car.

"I could see the first driver on his phone when we were following him down the road - he must have been arranging for someone to come and help him.

"I drove as fast as I could to get away and managed to hide in Cardrona. We were both shaking.

"This has left us deeply traumatised."

The first suspect is described as around 5ft 10in, with a thin build, Scottish accent with dark hair brushed forward - possibly in his late 20s.

He was wearing a dark top with a white logo.

The second suspect had a shaven head, possibly around 40-years-old with a Scottish accent and was wearing grey.

Investigating officers are desperate to track down the thugs.

Sergeant Stephen Granger told us: “One of the cars was described as a white Fiat 500 with a 64 plate.

“It’s possible that another driver may have noticed this car driving through Eddleston as it had its full beam lights on directly behind the victim’s car.

“This has been quite a shocking incident for the victims and we’re eager to trace those responsible.”
