AN appeal has been made for Borderers to share their family stories of WWI ahead of an event next month.

Saving and Sharing the Borders Experience: Scottish Borders Stories of World War One is a two-year project run by by the Live Borders Museums, Archives and Library Services.

It aims to provide a unique and lasting commemorative record of the First World War and its legacy for the Borders.

Ahead of an event a free event will taking place on Sunday, July 24 at Harestanes Countryside Visitor Centre an invitation has been made for people to dig out their WWI letters, diaries, photographs and more to share on the day.

Ewan Jackson, chief executive of Live Borders said: “This unique project will document the impact and significance of these turbulent years on our local and national heritage.

"The generations who have direct links with those who have lived through the First World War are getting older and this may be our last chance to capture their rich stories.”

The project will document the region’s social and family heritage of this momentous period by recording material in various formats including scans, photographs and sound recordings so that it can be made widely available and secured for future generations.

The Harestanes event on Sunday, July 24 runs from 12noon to 4.30pm.

The award-winning Jedforest Instrumental Band will play popular music from the First World War period from 2.30pm.
