FESTIVAL celebrations began in Melrose on Sunday.

And they will continue throughout the week with 2016 Melrosian Struan Hutchison leading his town in their historic traditions and colourful ceremonies.

On Sunday the 20-year-old was 'Kirked In' at the Old Parish Church following a wreath-laying ceremony at the town's War Memorial.

A total of 186 mounted followers joined the Melrosian for the annual rideout on Monday evening as many more lined the historic High Street to welcome the Principals and their mounted supporters.

Struan said: "I've lived in Melrose all of my life and this is something all of us boys in the town wanted to do. It is every young boy’s dream.

"It is an honour to represent my town as Melrosian."

Following Monday's rideout, presentations were made to the youngest rider (not on a rein), Kirsty Lothian from Walkerburn, the oldest rider, Stuart Bannon from Galashiels, the smartest junior rider, Marion Hastie, and the smartest senior rider, Laura Douglas.

The fun continued last (Tuesday) night with the fancy dress parade and disco.

Tonight the cycle ride will leave Gibson Park at 6.30pm, and tomorrow the Installation of the Melrosian and Crowning of the Festival Queen ceremonies take place within Melrose Abbey from 7pm.

The Principals will make their school and hospital visits during Friday ahead of the Festival Ball.

And on Saturday the Tour of Ceremonies begins from the Market Square at 9am.
