A TERRIFIED mum says a barrier should be erected at the scene of a bus crash in Jedburgh.

Bridget Lamont described how she heard the "screeching brakes" as the single-decker careered off the A68 and through a nearby wall on Thursday morning.

The bus was only saved by a metal railing at the side of the water.

But the mum of two says a metal barrier at the side of the road could potentially save lives.

Bridget told the Border Telegraph: "I was in the dining room and heard a screeching noise and I looked out and a bus had hit our next door neighbour's wall.

"It seemed to miss the garden and it went down the bank towards the river. You could hear the driver trying to put the brakes on because it was just skidding. It was going too fast. It was all over the place.

"That's when I went out and phoned the emergency services," she added.

"There's been a few accidents around the same spot. Some cars are too fast.

"They should maybe put a barrier up to stop cars coming off the road and onto the grass."

Bridget also said she is relieved that her children weren't playing outside.

She said: "I've got two children and they're always outside. But luckily on Thursday it was raining so they weren't out.

"My neighbour also has a little boy and if he had been near that wall, sitting on their bench, it could have been a lot worse.

"We're petrified to put the kids in the garden."

The cause of the crash is unknown, but police say their "enquiries are ongoing."

A spokesperson for Police Scotland added: "No one was injured in the incident however a small number of passengers were left shaken and were checked over by paramedics at the scene.

"The road was closed for around an hour while the vehicle was safely removed."

On Wednesday two cars also collided near the same scene at around midday.
A spokesperson said: "A Volkswagen Golf collided with a Skoda on Wednesday and we got the call just before 12.10pm.

"The ambulance and the fire service were also called to assist.

"There were no serious injuries but the driver of the Volkswagen was taken to Borders General Hospital and the driver of the Skoda was taken to Jedburgh Health Centre.

"It was all clear by 2.23pm."
