A MELROSE and District Community Councillor says more has to be done to keep the streets clean.

Val Miller raised her concerns at a meeting of the community council on Wednesday, March 15 after it was announced the town had made it onto the Sunday Times' 'best places to live in Scotland' list.

And Ms Miller, who is vice-chair of Melrose in Bloom, say keeping the streets clean is a must in order to attract more tourists.

She said: "More needs to be done on cleaning the town. While we appreciate the lorry comes around, the streets are not being cleaned adequately.

"We need to get in behind things to do it properly. The pavements are dirty and we would like the service to be improved.

"We have to do more if we are appearing in the Times and we want to be a bit of a jewel in the crown."

Community Councillors also expressed their worry over the amount of chewing gum stuck to the ground and called on people to take responsibility for their actions.

Local councillor Jim Torrance said: "I had a quick walk around and it was nice to see some shopkeepers and business owners sweeping outside their shops.

"It was really nice to see people washing the pavements and taking care of the area."
