THE feasibility of Galashiels Academy and Selkirk High School having their future electricity needs served by solar panels is to be investigated.

Scottish Borders Council has this week awarded a £9,750 contract for the studies to be carried out by Norwich-based NPS Property Consultants Ltd.

The firm – the only one to bid for the work – will “assess the feasibility of providing an optimised solar photo-voltaic panel installation” at 11 schools across the region, as well as at the main building of council headquarters at Newtown St Boswells.

The other schools to be assessed by the consultants are Hawick High and the primaries at Kingsland, Priorsford (both Peebles), Lauder, Clovenfords, Westruther, St Ronans (Innerleithen), Tweedbank and Gordon.

“We require this work in order that we can go out to tender for the installations of the panels on suitable sites,” said SBC’s property manager Stuart Mawson.

“The optimum solution is to arrive at a preferred array size so that the use of electricity generated by the panels can be maximised on site, with minimal export to the National Grid during normal operation.”
