THE therapeutic benefits of gardening are being harnessed to help the treatment and recovery of acute mentally ill patients at the Huntlyburn Ward near Melrose.

The Space to Grow project is focused on ground the rear of the 19-bed NHS Borders facility and offers an alternative option to ward-based activities and therapies.

“It gives patients a structure to their day, encourages physical activity and is an outlet for agitation while also giving them a sense of achievement and empowerment, boosting both confidence and self belief,” said ward nurse Jan Moffat from Galashiels.

“We’ve already had some lovely testimonials from patients who have felt the positive impact on their mental wellbeing – from digging and harvesting to growing plants from seed.

“However, to get the most out of the area, we need money for landscaping as well as materials.”

To that end, Jan has helped organise a fundraising Frock Swap event in Darnick Village Hall this Friday, April 28, from 7 till 9pm.

“It’s a classier version of a women’s second hand clothing market for dresses, handbags and accessories and a great chance to pick something that’s ‘new to you’,” said Jan.

Tickets £10, which include a glass of fizz and nibbles, are available from the hall on the evening or in advance from jan.moffat@borders.scot.nhs.uk or by calling 07749 173 581.
