A CALL to arms has been made by the volunteers attempting to rebuild Wooplaw Community Woodland.

Last year the popular outdoor destination near Blainslie was targetted two times in one week by fire-starting vandals.

As well as the main meeting hut a nearby composting toilet was also torched during the attacks.

Campaigners successfully raised enough money during an online fundraiser to rebuild the woodland's hut.

And initial construction work began earlier this month.

Over the coming weeks it is hoped to complete the new stone-based main hut - but the trustees need some help.

David Donnelly from Wooplaw Community Woodland told us: "The response we got after the fires was really encouraging with lots of pledges to lend a hand.

"Well, now is the time we need a hand.

"Over the next few Saturdays there will be a lot of work to be done as the main hut takes shape. Anyone who can lend a hand will be most welcome."

Wooplaw Woods near Blainslie became the first community woodland in the entire UK 30 years ago.

It was the brainchild of the late Tim Stead, who was a well-known wood sculptor and furniture maker.

Mr Stead raised the money to launch the initiative by making and selling wooden axeheads.

Over the past 30 years thousands of trees have been planted by volunteers as well as trails, wildlife ponds and additional sculptures being created.

And the original meeting hut had remained popular with youth and community groups taking advantage of the outdoors.

Following last year's damage, it was decided to not just replace the burnt-out buildings but also expand car parking at the site and create a new barbecue area.

Mr Donnelly added: "The posts are in and the walls are being added to the main meeting hut.

"We have also began to expand the car park and over the coming weeks and months we will create a new barbecue area and find a suitable location for a replacement composting toilet.

"Last year was a terrible blow for everyone who enjoys Wooplaw, but, we are slowly but surely recovering."

Anyone who can help with some manual labour is asked to attend at the community woodland any Saturday from 10am.
