VIEWS are being sought on plans to permanently close an education centre in the Borders.

Hawick’s Wilton Centre housed a support service for children and young people with behavioural needs.

The service is now carried out in school settings instead of the standalone unit.

Scottish Borders Council (SBC) is proposing to close the centre after its education sub-committee backed the launch of a consultation in April.

The building itself, also known as the Arches, temporarily closed during the Covid pandemic.

It was given a very low suitability rating of D by surveyors, according to SBC.

The local authority said it would need “significant capital investment” to make it fit for the modern day.

A council spokesperson said: “The purpose of this consultation is for the Scottish Borders community to provide views and comment on the proposal to permanently close the building.”

The six-week consultation will close on Friday, June 28. An online public meeting will take place before it shuts.

The consultation can be accessed online at: scotborders.citizenspace.com.
