A SUCCESSFUL support group in the Borders is set to benefit after a fundraising book sold out within a month.

The local branch of Parkinson's UK meets monthly at Borders General Hospital.

There are also satellite groups in Peebles, Hawick and Newcastleton as well as special monthly meetings for younger sufferers held in Galashiels.

Several ladies from the Peebles group spent the summer collecting favourite recipes from Parkinson's sufferers in the region as well as their families and friends.

And last month Parky Malarkey in the Kitchen was published.

The delightful dishes have proven to be a hit with the original print run of 100 selling out within three weeks.

A further 200 copies have now arrived in time for Christmas.

Gary Hattie from the Borders branch of Parkinson's UK told us: "We are delighted with the success of the recipe book.

"The idea for the book came from the ladies of our Peebles meetings.

"After the branch had a sale of cakes an traybakes at the BGH, they said they weren't that good at baking and much better at cooking.

"They decided then that if we put our heads together we could come up with a cook book, and so the seed was planted.

"Six months later Parky Malarkey in the Kitchen is printed and ready for sale."

The Borders support group has been running for 15 years and currently has around 200 members spread across the region.

Parkinson's is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system.

Amongst the many high profile sufferers are former boxing champion Muhammad Ali and actor Michael J Fox.

The Borders branch meets at the BGH Chaplaincy Centre from 2pm on the last Monday of each month.

Gary added: "We offer friendship, information and support to anyone suffering from Parkinson's as well as their families and carers."

Parky Malarkey in the Kitchen is available from members.
