ROADS bosses believe the Borders is the best prepared it has ever been for winter.

As of last Friday the local authority had stockpiled more than 18,400 tonnes of salt in depots across the region.

It had also added a further three new gritting vehicles to its fleet of 60.

And more than 1,000 grit bins are filled and ready to use.

Councillor Gordon Edgar, who is the spokesman for transport, said: "We now have 31 fixed gritting vehicles and a further 29 vehicles which can be adapted to grit the roads.

"We are equipped with the latest technology to forecast the weather and the conditions, which allows us to respond quickly."

"We are as prepared as we are ever going to be.
