AN out-of-school club in Melrose has been slammed by inspectors.

The Big Space, which is located in an annexe of Melrose Primary School, caters for up to 45 children between four and 15 years old.

Although popular with parents and children, inspectors from the Care Inspectorate found major failings in the way the centre was being run.

During the visit in January inspectors found arrangements for heating and serving food to the children as 'unacceptable', safety policies required updating and storage cupboards were untidy.

But most of the criticism came in for the management and leadership.

A spokesman for the Care Inspectorate said: "Since the last inspection the manager has made little progress in ensuring staff were qualified, motivated or well trained.

"The manager had made little progress in meeting the requirement surrounding quality assurance.

"Previously we had asked the service to improve aspects of the whole service.

"These areas for concerns are still on-going and reflect the significant need for improved management and leadership within the service.

"During the inspection it came to our attention that the manager did not fulfil their responsibility or carry out the correct policies and procedures to ensure children were kept safe."

The Big Space, which is operated by a voluntary committee, offers a Breakfast Club and After School Club as well as providing childcare during holidays.

During January's unannounced inspection it was scored as 'Adequate' for quality of Care, quality of Environment, and quality of Staffing.

But it was branded 'Weak' for quality of Management and Leadership.

Since the inspection a new acting manager has been appointed.

The spokesman added: "The manager did not provide the committee with a plan of improvements from our previous inspection report.

"Therefore, there was no clear overview of the club or any action needed to improve the outcomes for children.

"During feedback we provided clear expectations about the improvements needed to the acting manager and committee.

"We are confident that the service and committee are aware of the continued improvements needed to promote good outcomes for children."

Inspectors will make a follow-up visit within the next 12 months.
