A HOTEL in the Borders hosted what is believed to be the first doggy wedding in Scotland last week.

Cringletie House Hotel, near Peebles, witnessed the marriage between Molly, a standard poodle cross, and Monty, a Daschund cross, on Thursday.

And they celebrated with specialist made doggy ice cream and the hotel created a special doggy wedding cake to mark the occasion.

Whilst “woof weddings” are now very fashionable amongst the pet set, this is believed to be the first event of its kind in Scotland. The idea of providing weddings for dogs is the barking idea of the general manager, Jeremy Osborne. After years of providing weddings for human couples he revealed he felt that there may be a market for canine ceremonies.

Mr Osborne, whose wife Gwen is Monty’s owner, said: “It went brilliantly. We were lucky with the weather but had the wellies ready for dogs and guests just in case! I love dogs, I do a lot of weddings anyway so why should they miss out?

“This is a perfect venue to do a doggy wedding. It’s a perfect setting with a nice wooded surrounding so the dogs can relax and they can have their own dinner table too.” Molly’s owner, Seren Evans-Charrington, who is currently researching the history of dog ownership, travelled with her pet from her home in west Wales to take part in the ceremony.

And the social historian revealed she couldn’t resist taking part in the hotels very first woofy wedding.

Seren explained: “A dog is described as being man’s best friend and there is a wealth of stories pertaining to this, however, it is the way in which we have changed the way we look after and treat our canine companion that interests me and what better example of this than a doggy wedding.”
