A CYCLIST was left fighting for his life after his bike was involved in a collision with a car in the Borders this week.

Police have appealed for information following the smash on the A72 road between Peebles and Galashiels, near to Eshiels Mill on Monday around 6pm.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after the alarm was raised.

The cyclist, who is believed to be in his 70s, suffered what has been described as “serious injuries” after colliding with a Volvo.

He was rushed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment and, as we went to press, his condition was described as “critical”.

The road was closed for six hours to allow an investigation to be carried out.

Commenting on the story on our Facebook page, Fiona Whitie said: “I drove past and saw the bike mangled and people helping him. I didn’t see what happened.” Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed this collision to contact Police Scotland on 101.
