ILLEGAL drugs with a street value of almost £4000 and £1200 in cash have been seized following the biggest police operation in the Borders since the new single force was formed.

More than 100 officers, many in full riot gear, were involved in raids at eight addresses in Galashiels, Hawick, Kelso and Selkirk during Operation Archerfish - which targeted suspected drug dealers.

As well as a quantity of cannabis, other suspected controlled drugs were unearthed and have been sent for further examination.

Two men, aged 32 and 34, have been arrested and charged in connection with the raids and are expected to appear at Jedburgh Sheriff Court tomorrow (Friday).

A male is also being sought in relation to a cannabis cultivation and further inquiries are being carried out for other drug supply offences.

Detective Chief Inspector Stephen Healy, Specialist Crime Division, said: "This operation was devised due to feedback from the local community. Over 100 officers took part in today's executive day of action and we have sent a strong message to those in our community who peddle harmful substances to the public.

"However our work does not stop today. Tackling drug crime and drug misuse is a key priority for Police Scotland. We need more information from the public in order to stop these criminals. Those with information can contact police on 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

Police have also been distributing information about the illegal use of drugs, and how it can be reported, in Galashiels town centre where there have been high visibility patrols throughout the day.

A Police Scotland spokesperson added: "We will continue to work with partners within Local Government and the NHS to tackle issues impacting on the health and welfare of our communities."
