POLICE are probing the theft of cash from an elderly patient at Borders General Hospital.

An 87-year-old man was recovering from a heart operation on ward 9 when his money was taken on January 27.

And the Border Telegraph has received other reports of money being swiped on the same ward.

The son of the 87-year-old victim told us: “One of the WRVS volunteers told me that money had gone missing from another patient just a day or two before.

“It is terrible that the elderly aren’t even safe on a hospital ward.

“We reported the theft to both the hospital and the police.” We did ask NHS Borders about security on the wards of the BGH.

But they hadn’t responded to our request at time of going to press.

Police Scotland told us that enquiries are ongoing into the ward 9 theft.

A spokesperson said: “Police in the Borders are currently investigating a theft from Borders General Hospital which occurred between 11pm on January 26 and 11am on January 27.

“A three-figure sum of cash belonging to a patient was reported stolen. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101.”
