A 57-YEAR-OLD woman was left shaken after she had her bag snatched on her way to work in Galashiels.

Police are appealing for witnesses following the theft in the town's Abbotsford Road shortly before 5am on Monday.

The victim was walking near the town's fire station when a man approached from behind and stole her Tesco bag for life before running off in the direction of the Public Park.

Local officers are now urging anyone who can assist with their ongoing inquiries to come forward.

The suspect is described only as white, tall and skinny and wearing a hooded top with the hood up.

Sergeant Stephen Granger from Galashiels Police Station said: “This incident left the woman very distressed, though, thankfully she was not injured.

“Anyone who was on Abbotsford Road at the time and saw anything suspicious is asked to contact police immediately.

“In particular, we would like to trace a motorist who stopped to check on the victim after the incident and would ask this individual to get in touch, as he may have information relevant to this investigation.

“Similarly, anyone with any further information that can help identify the suspect should also get in touch.”

Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively, the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
