POLICE are trying to trace an elderly woman they believe may have come in to contact with a man armed with an axe allegedly spotted roaming the streets of Galashiels.

Officers revealed the suspect was spotted in Langlee earlier today (Monday, December 28) around 9.30am.

He was allegedly seen carrying the tool in Beech Avenue, Woodstock Avenue and Langlee Drive.

A 27-year-old man has been arrested and charged with being in possession of an axe. He is now in police custody and is expected to appear at court tomorrow (Tuesday).

However, as part of their enquiry, police have issued an appeal for witnesses.

Inspector Bryan Burns, of Galashiels Police Station, said: "Thanks to the swift actions of our officers, this man was quickly arrested.

"However we're keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, particularly an elderly woman who may have come into contact with the man in Langlee Drive.

"She's believed to be in her mid 70s, with short silver/grey hair, wearing a light quilted jacket, holding a walking stick and walking a white and tan coloured dog."
