GALASHIELS danced the night away on Friday as one of the town’s longest running entertainment clubs enjoyed a milestone birthday.

The Galashiels Scottish Country Dance Club celebrated its 90th anniversary in style.

The anniversary event was held at the Old Parish and St Paul’s Church Hall.

Organisers decorated the hall with 90th birthday balloons and many members and former members, in their finest dancing gear, took to the floor for milestone evening.

The anniversary evening night kicked off at 7.30pm with a fantastic meal to make sure all of the dancers were filled with energy.

The toe-tapping traditional music was provided throughout a memorable night by Marian Anderson’s Band.

Organiser Marion Stirling told the Border Telegraph: “We had a fantastic night with over 100 folk there.

“Our night started with a delicious meal, before we moved onto the dance.

“It was a great turnout, and we’ve had a lot of great feedback about the event.

“It was such a lovely way to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Gala Scottish Dance Country Club.”

The club has had several dance teachers over its 90-year history.

John Duthie was the first teacher and remained at the club for almost 40 years, between its inception in 1926 to 1963.

Mrs Nen MacKimven took over from 1963 all the way through to 1988.

She was followed by Mr Dan Blackwood between 1988-1997, then Mrs Ann Naismith took the reigns between 1997 and 2004.

During sessions between 2002 and 2004, Dr Lyn Bryce and Miss Margaret Lang assisted Ann with the teaching for members to gain even further experience.

The current teacher of the club is Dr Lyn Bryce.

Marion added: “We continue to hold our Galashiels Dance Class every Tuesday night from seven until nine, and all are welcome to come down and join.”
