LOCAL MP Christine Grahame is seeking suggestions on ways to bring new life back into Galashiels town centre, writes Zoe Daniel.

Following the recent announcement that the town will become the permanent home for the Great Tapestry of Scotland visitor centre, the SNP politician has launched a public survey to collate ideas on how to interweave even more life back into the main streets.

Ms Grahame said: "Galashiels is a town with a bright future but more needs to be done to capitalise on what it has to offer to bring more visitors and employment to the town.

"There are some great independent retailers and cafes in the centre but there are also too many empty premises.

"With the tapestry now confirmed for a home in Galashiels, it’s important we make the most of this and use it as an opportunity to kick-start real regeneration in Galashiels."

Recent Visit Scotland figures show tourism accounts for 10 per cent of all jobs in the Borders.

And with the tapestry set to hit the Border town in 2020, even more visitors are expected to head towards the region.

The MSP for Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale added: "If we can create a thriving town centre, not only is it better for Galashiels, it also encourages visitors to the wider area, which can only be a good thing for the Borders.

“I want to hear what the Galashiels community feels about this so as I can best represent their interests.

"I’ll be speaking to local businesses and I would encourage everyone to fill out my survey and have their say on their town’s future.”

Survey forms are available from Ms Grahame’s website, www.christinegrahame.com/surveys

Paper submissions can be made at her constituency office at 46 High Street in Galashiels.
