A VISITOR information stand in Galashiels still doesn’t contain a single leaflet promoting the town - four years after the community council first complained.

The unmanned display in the library, which replaced the town’s former tourist information centre in St John Street, hosts pamphlets advertising attractions in Harestanes and Hawick, as well as information on how to complain to Scottish Borders Council.

However, there was no information on the local museum at Old Gala House, one of the town’s biggest tourist attractions.

Addressing this month’s meeting of Galashiels and Langlee Community Council on Wednesday night, former Scottish Borders Council leader Drew Tulley said: “Everytime, when we want something done, an obstacle is put in our way.” The meeting heard that 1000 leaflets were printed on Old Gala House but they were not reprinted after they ran out.

Councillor Bill White, a former community council chairman who now represents the area on Scottish Borders Council, revealed that a private company charged local businesses £32 to include their leaflet in the display.

However, Mr Tulley revealed if they printed more leaflets on Galashiels he would stock the stand for free.

He added: “The council is responsible for advertising Old Gala House - what is the problem?” Last month it emerged that a VisitScotland brochure promoting the town referred to the Braw Lads’ Gathering in Galashiels as the Galashiels Common Riding.

This week, Scottish Borders Council revealed 6000 copies of a leaflet promoting Gala Policies has been printed and will be distributed across the Borders.

However, it pointed out a leaflet promoting Old Gala House was dropped because they claim it did little to attract new visitors to the museum.

A spokesperson for the local authority said: “A trial leaflet with an 800 copy print run was produced in 2010. As subsequent evaluation of the leaflet and its distribution found that it had done little to increase visitor numbers, it was felt that it would be more effective continuing to promote Old Gala House in the main Museums and Galleries Guide which is produced each year.

“This is distributed widely across the Scottish Borders and the Lothians and features Old Gala House prominently toward the front of the 2014 issue. In addition, posters are created for each exhibition held at the museum which are circulated to all cultural and heritage sites including libraries, sports facilities, other museums and galleries and tea shops. The Museums Service also produces an official guide to Old Gala House which visitors can purchase from the gift shop.”
