FEARS have been voiced some of the region’s most vulnerable residents could be left trapped in their homes unless a local project can get more help.

Gala Wheels arranges low cost transport for those with wheelchairs or mobility difficulties - including trips to the shops, theatre and, last week, a funeral in Manchester.

Last year, Dorothy Anderson, a resident of Riverside care home in Selkirk, took advantage of the life-line service to celebrate her 98th birthday.

The Galashiels-based project, a member of the registered charity Borders Disability Forum, has a number of wheelchair accessible vehicles for hire and is available to individuals and community groups throughout Selkirkshire.

However, with only a limited number of regular drivers, it is struggling to keep up with demand and has launched an appeal for more volunteers.

Dorothy’s daughter Pam Johnson booked a Gala Wheels vehicle to take her mum out for a birthday lunch at The Woll, then back to Riverside for a celebration with a birthday cake and presents with the Riverside staff. Pam said: “It’s a great service and it is the only way we would be able to take mum out.” Anyone can apply to be a registered driver for a disabled relative or friend, you just need a clean driving licence and to complete a short training course.
