POLICE have confirmed an officer has been taken to hospital after being injured while apprehending a suspected shoplifter in Galashiels.
It follows an incident at the town's Tesco store in Paton Street this morning (Wednesday, April 1) around 9.45am.
A 42-year-old man has been charged with theft by shoplifting, resisting arrest and possession of a knife and is expected to appear at Selkirk Sheriff Court tomorrow (Thursday).
A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Police in Galashiels responded to the Tesco store in Paton Street at around 9.45am on Wednesday 1st April following reports of a shoplifter within the premises.
"The male struggled violently with officers while being apprehended and as a result one the officers sustained a leg injury and was taken to the Borders General Hospital for treatment.
"Police are continuing to speak with staff and other witnesses at the store in relation to this matter."
