A NEW breakfast club could be set up in Langlee amid fears that children are going hungry during the Easter holidays while the schools are closed.
Langlee Residents Association heard a pilot project was held at the community centre’s Roundabout Cafe last summer and attracted up to 35 families each day.
Members were told that the local primary school runs a breakfast club during term time but in the holidays they suspected some children were forced to go without.
LRA chairman Judith Cleghorn suggested the Healthy Living Network team could host a breakfast club in the new Community House in Beech Avenue in the summer.
And secondary school children are being invited to get help run it in return for gaining experience in a kitchen environment.
“If kids are going to breakfast clubs at schools, there is probably a need to offer a similar service outside of those times,” Ms Cleghorn said. “If they call in to see us, it gives us an opportunity to illustrate what else is going on in the community too.” Gordon Elliot, health improvement specialist with the Healthy Living Network, based in Langlee Community Centre, said: “It is something we would like to do again.” But he added: “We would like for volunteers to run it.”
