DETAILED plans for a replacement primary school in the Langlee area of Galashiels have been unveiled.

Education chiefs want to replace the current building, which dates from the 1960s, with a modern three-storey building to cater for the increased school roll.

The plans reveal that the spacious building will have 14 classrooms located around a generous break-out area.

The building will also incorporate an early years centre, a dedicated Special Educational Needs area, a nursery, a sports hall and outdoor MUGA pitch.

A full planning application was submitted last week.

Councillor Sandy Aitchison, who is spokesman for education at Newtown, said: “The submission of the planning application for a new Langlee Primary School is wonderful news.

“The primary school is an integral part of the local community and this new building with modern facilities will be a fantastic asset for generations of children, as well as the many local organisations and groups we hope will use it.” Parents will get a closer look at the proposed new building during a public consultation day next month.

The event, which is being held at the school, is on Wednesday, September 2 between 2pm and 7pm, will give everyone the opportunity to study drawings for the new building.

They will also be able to ask Scottish Borders Council staff questions about the £12.1 million project.

Councillor Aitchison added: “I would encourage parents and members of the public from the local community to come along to the public consultation to find out more.” Work is currently scheduled to begin in early 2016, with the building to be completed the following summer.
